On Sunday, September 27th, a member of the church mentioned to me during Sunday School that they had poked their head into the sanctuary and that there was “something new.”
Earlier in the week, video screens were added to the sanctuary with several aims. First and foremost, the aim of the screens is to enhance the Sunday worship. They are not meant to be a distraction, but something that complements what we already do. Secondly, the screens will be an important part of infusing some newer music into the service at some point in the coming year.
As I announced on that first Sunday, this is new to me too. Screens in church went against my conservative sensibilities and I never envisioned attending a church that had them. However, one of the many things I learned during my internship at Montezuma was that the screens came in handy at several times during the worship service. I also saw how it made it easier for some folks to sing, singing out and not down into a hymnal (the hymnals are not going anywhere). In a way I never imagined, the screen at Montezuma faded from novelty to just a regular part of worship. That’s certainly my hope as we learn together what does and what doesn’t make our services more meaningful moving forward.
Please do not hesitate to offer suggestions. Tell me what worked and what didn’t for you so that we can all get the most out of our newest worship tools.
